Teacher cries foul in termination threat

In the year that she was up for tenure, a sixth grade teacher from Millview Elementary School has resigned her position to keep from being fired. Now she is regretting that action and is seeking a public hearing on what she has called an “unethical and unfit decision” on the part of Madera Unified School District.

Probationary teacher Aida Romero is accusing her principal, Stephanie McPherson, of treating her unfairly and Madera Unified’s Chief Academic Officer Robert Chavez of rushing her into resigning under the threat of receiving a notice of non-reelection (termination).

Director of Human Resources Tracie Green confirmed that Romero has resigned, effective at the end of the present school year and that the school board has accepted her resignation. Beyond that, Green would not discuss Romero’s accusations because of privacy issues. She says the district has followed all of the statutory requirements that relate to “personnel decisions that are made at the end of each school year.”

Romero first appeared before the school board on March 5 to protest the district’s decision to not rehire her for the next school year. She appeared again before the board at its March 12 meeting requesting that trustees “open my case in an open hearing.”...
