Relay For Life to begin Saturday

Maderans from across the community will converge on Lions Town and Country Park this weekend for the annual American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. A record number of teams, 75, registered this year and include teams from schools, churches, businesses, service clubs, agencies, families and others.

The event kicks off Saturday morning at 8:45 with a presentation of colors by the Fresno State ROTC followed at 9 by Mayor Robert Poythress reading a proclamation. During opening ceremonies, two “Heroes of Hope” speakers, cancer survivor Curtis Sournier and caregiver Rick McCullough, will give inspirational presentations.

The traditional first lap of the Relay will be walked by cancer survivors followed by a second lap to honor the caregivers.

According to event director Charlotte Brewer, this year’s Relay will feature two new contests. Prizes will be awarded to the most Radical Relayer, who dons the most Relay gear from head to toe. Another award will be presented to the participant who best shows his or her Hawaiian spirit...
