May is National Bike Month and some Maderans will celebrate that non-polluting mode of transportation during a free Bike-Walk Madera event scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. today from the south end of Rotary Park near the pavilion and horseshoe courts.

The Madera Sunrise Rotary Club, Madera Parks and Community Services, Madera Police Department and Walmart have joined together for the event to promote exercise, community togetherness and awareness of the Vern McCullough River Trail.

Everyone, young and old, is eligible to ride or walk the trail. Everyone must sign a waiver, and youth under 18 must have their parents sign the waiver. The police department will stop traffic for riders and walkers where the trail crosses streets. Green “Bike Walk Madera” T-shirts will be available for $5 or $30 for a family.

Event coordinator Peggy Gregory encourages everyone to participate. “Together we can turn the River Trail into a river of green,” she said.
