Rim Fire is 60 percent contained, say officials

Good progress was made overnight in the containment of the fourth-largest fire in California’s history, the U.S. Forest Service reported Monday, and the flames are expected to be fully controlled within the month.

The Rim Fire is expected to be fully contained by Sept. 20, the forest service said.

Burning within Stanislaus National Forest — about 45 miles north of Oakhurst — the blaze grew to about 357 square miles in size Monday afternoon.

The blaze started Aug. 17 in the Stanislaus National Forest, and two-thirds of the land burned since then is located there as well, according to The Associated Press. The cause is being investigated. More than 5,500 structures are threatened with more than 4,600 personnel fighting the conflagration...
