A popular campground in Coarsegold was victim to a daring heist over Labor Day, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office reported Tuesday, when an unknown number of robbers made off with more than $44,000 in cash and checks.
The robbery happened some time around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday morning inside the office of the Yosemite South/Coarsegold Kampgrounds of America (KOA) campground, sheriff’s spokes-person Erica Stuart said.
Campers, asleep after they enjoyed Labor Day on the campsite’s 30 acres complete with more modern amenities, were awoken around that time by the roaring of a motorcycle engine fleeing the scene, Stuart said.
“Nobody saw anything,” Stuart said. “I mean this is a family campground so people were asleep when all they heard was the motorcycle waking them up, which is strange because nobody said they saw a motorcycle come in.” ...
