High school students sang and played to their heart’s content in a concert to benefit their peers. The annual Choir Holiday Dessert Theater, put on by the music department at Madera South High School, featured the guitar ensemble, the band, several vocal soloists, the choir and a new show choir.
The school’s stage in the cafeteria, decorated to reflect the holiday season with Christmas lights and ribbons, served as the concert’s venue on Friday and Saturday. Dessert was served during intermission.
“I think our students are doing a wonderful job. They’ve been working really hard this year and it shows in their performance, which is really, really good,” said Roger Harabedian, the choir director. The event has been put on for 10 years, according to Harabedian, but last year was the first time the proceeds were used to fund scholarships.
“Traditionally it’s been organized by choir, but starting last year we included some of our other departments because we wanted to raise money to start a scholarship fund for our graduating seniors,” said Harabedian. “So last year we were able to give $300 to choir, band and drama. Drama was part of it last year. This year we’ll see how much we raise and hopefully we can give out some more scholarships.” ...
