Sheriff: victims attacked last week for meth they meant to sell

In what he described as a highly unusual crime for Madera County and a botched drug deal, Madera county Sheriff John Anderson announced during a Tuesday press conference that a foreign suspect had been arrested in last week's shooting that left two victims with serious gunshot wounds and a third running for his life.

Elias Lopez-Martinez, 25, from Oaxaca, Mexico was arrested Dec. 31 and faces deportation for his alleged crimes, which include attempted murder, robbery, and impersonating a police officer.

A second suspect, also believed to be from Oaxaca, remained on the loose Tuesday, Anderson said. He urged anyone with information to call the sheriff’s office at 675-7770.

The 22-year-old Chowchilla victim who was shot in the face has since been released, while the 17-year-old from Madera who was shot in the torso remains in the hospital in critical condition...
