$4,000 in damages to three cars

Two Yosemite High School students face felony vandalism charges after Madera County sheriff’s spokeswoman Erica Stuart said they skipped class then were caught on video egging cars at a rival high school last week.

The students, 18-year-old Alex Mears and a 17-year-old, both from Oakhurst, were seen on video Thursday as they drove into the Minarets High School parking lot and threw eggs at several vehicles before speeding away, Stuart said.

Stuart said at least three victims reported more than $4,000 in damages to their vehicles from the “egging rampage” — eggs contain sulfur, which etches into car paint and causes it to crack or chip — during last week’s brief storm.

“The victims didn’t discover the extent of the damage until hours after the weather had cleared,” Stuart said. Mears and the minor student were tracked down Friday and taken into custody, Stuart said. The 17-year-old was transported to Madera County Juvenile Hall, while Mears remained Monday in Madera County Jail on $10,000 bail for criminal conspiracy and felony vandalism charges...
