Gonzalez says MUSD needs new schools; financing

“Madera Unified needs to begin building a new elementary school now and very soon will need to start a third high school,” said Superintendent Ed Gonzalez in an interview Wednesday afternoon with The Madera Tribune.

Gonzalez was explaining why he recently has brought a bevy of experts to address the school board on the matter of financing new school construction.

According to Gonzalez, the elementary population of Madera Unified increased by 242 pupils this year. Two more years of this level of growth will necessitate a new elementary school. Since it takes about three years to build an elementary school, Gonzalez said he is recommending that the district begin to build the new facility this summer.

Gonzalez said the district has enough funds from the 2006 school bond to build the new elementary school, which will cost approximately $24 million...
