The fourth film festival at Madera Community College is set to feature three films starring English stage and screen actor, the late Paul Scofield.
Scofield was an Academy Award-winner who was noted for his distinctive voice. He received the Best Actor Oscar award for his performance as Sir Thomas More in the 1966 film “A Man for All Seasons.”
That movie, which itself won six Academy Awards, will be the opener for the Your Name Is My Name: A Paul Scofield Film Festival at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The film also stars Robert Shaw as King Henry VIII, Orson Welles as Cardinal Wolsey, and a young John Hurt as Richard Rich. The title character, More, struggles with ideas of identity and conscience. As the 16th-century chancellor of England, More refused to endorse the king’s divorce or his later claim to be Supreme Governor of the Church of England.
The festival will continue Saturday with the screening of “Henry V,” a 1989 British film directed by Kenneth Branagh and based on Shakespeare’s play of the same name. The film stars Branagh in the title role, with Paul Scofield as Charles IV of France. Set in 15th century England, the film is a rollicking adventure culminating in the Battle of Agincourt.
