Those who beat it, and those who lost the battle, will be honored in an annual 24-hour-long community event today where residents come together to raise money for research to beat a common enemy: cancer.
The Madera Relay for Life, organized by the American Cancer Society, is scheduled to begin with opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. where the presentation of the colors will be followed by a celebration ceremony and the traditional opening victory lap by cancer survivors and caregivers.
Organizers expect thousands of people to show to the event, co-sponsored by the City of Madera Parks and Community Services Department, at Lions Town and Country Park. With the theme of “All-American Relay,” the fundraiser is set to include more than 60 teams made up by groups from churches, schools, agencies, businesses and families.
Relay for Life has raised more than $100,000 locally in past years and, this year, at least $66,272 had already been raised by Friday afternoon, according to the Madera Relay for Life site on the American Cancer Society Web site...
