Hundreds of monarchs, painted ladies, morning cloaks and red admiral butterflies will flutter around a colorfully planted greenhouse Saturday as Home Grown Cellars’ Butterfly Sanctuary reopens in Madera County.

The sanctuary will be open Fridays and Sundays from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through the summer at 13702 Road 20, just south of Avenue 14.

Alex and Jackie Lehman own Home Grown Cellars, their family farm where they cultivate, grow, process and ship pomegranates and pomegranate products. The wares — including pomegranate soap, pomegranate oil, pomegranate honey, nuts and jellies — are also sold in the family’s country store, open Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Alex Lehman drives a trolley to take guests on a tour of the orchard, showcasing the pomegranate trees and telling the history of the farm and region. Visitors get to see how the pomegranate goes from fruit to juice...
