State releases scores on high school exit exam

The California Department of Education gave the public its first peek at the results of its annual, highstakes testing program Wednesday, which included data for Madera and Madera South high schools.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson took the veil off the California High School Exit Exam to give the public a preliminary look at how students performed last spring on the test in math and English Language Arts, which must be passed in order to graduate from high school.

Students first take the test in 10th grade, and if they fail, have more chances to take the test again. In grade 11, they can take the test two more times, and in 12, can have as many as five chances to pass.

The test results released Wednesday were those of last year’s 10th graders. Eightyfour percent of the sophomores at Madera High passed both the math and ELA tests...
