Board passes on pay increase

The Madera County Board of Supervisors elected to reject an automatic salary increase for the second straight year, county administrative officer Eric Fleming announced in a Friday press release.

The automatic increases stem from county policy that ties supervisor pay raises to those of state Superior Court Judges, Fleming said. The Judicial Council of California announced judges would receive a nearly-two-percent increase effective July 1 earlier this month.

Supervisors receive an annual salary of $71,515, Fleming said. If the board had accepted the two years of salary increases, they would instead receive $73,844.

“It is imperative that our board lead by example,” chairman Tom Wheeler said in a statement. “Finances remain tight and it is simply not the right time to accept a pay increase.”…
