School board filings close: 14 run for 7 seats

With the closing of the filing period for local races in the Nov. 4 general election at 5 p.m. Wednesday, candidates for positions on the school boards of Madera Unified and Golden Valley School Districts are fixed.

According to Stephanie Sibley, Madera County Elections division manager, five incumbents and nine challengers have filed the necessary papers to officially enter their respective school board races.

In Madera Unified, there are four openings on the school board. Three of the four incumbents whose terms have ended have filed their papers for reelection.

Among the MUSD incumbents, only Michael Salvador is not seeking another term on the school board, since he is in a runoff race with Jay Varney for Madera County Sheriff. Al Galvez, who is presently a member of the Madera County Board of Education and the Madera Unified Personnel Commission, filed to replace Salvador in Area 5 and has no opposition. Therefore, he will gain the seat and will not be on the ballot in November...
