FAIRMEAD — A 32-year old man walking across northbound State Route 99 near the intersection of SR 152 was struck and killed about 4:35 a.m. Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The coroners office identified the man as Carlos Manuel Saldana of Planada.
Officer Mark Cosentino said the man was walking westward across SR 99, south of the Califa overpass. He managed to cross one lane of traffic, and then kept walking, directly into the path of a 2006 Peterbuilt semi truck moving at highway speeds. The man landed in the lanes and was then struck by another semi truck.
“The investigation into the fatality has just begun. But the female driver that swerved and (narrowly) missed him reported he just kept walking. So he may have been trying to walk to work, was lost, disoriented, or possibly under the influence. No disabled or abandoned vehicles were found nearby,” Cosentino said...
