2014 Relay For Life raises $113,499

Community efforts for the American Cancer Society’s 2014 Madera Relay for Life raised $113,499 to support the society’s efforts against cancer and for those affected by the disease. For the past decade, Madera has broken the $100,000 mark annually in fund-raising.

The last event of the year, held just prior to the closing date for income as established by the American Cancer Society, was the recent Bark For Life at Lions Town and Country Park, and it raised nearly $4,000. Other events were held throughout the year with the actual Relay For Life event being held May 3-4 at the park.

At that weekend event, 61 teams were registered, including 12 new teams. Teams came from schools, businesses, companies, agencies, service clubs and families. According to chairwoman Charlotte Brewer, there were 471 registered participants including 109 registered survivors and nearly 1,000 people attending throughout the weekend.

“Ever since I have been involved with relay, it has been so rewarding to see the people of this city come together that weekend not only to help in the fight against cancer, but to honor the survivors of that dreaded disease,” said Brewer...
