Residents, including school and city officials, are planning various events, recognitions and educational activities to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month in Madera.
The annual observation, which started Monday and is set to run until Oct. 15, recognizes the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens, whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The month will be proclaimed by the city council on Oct. 1, according to its agenda. Members of several local organizations, including Latinas Unidas, AMAE, Pan American Club and student members from the Aztlan Club at Madera Center and the MAYA Club at Madera High are planning to accept the proclamation at the 6:30 p.m. council meeting.
A free public screening of the PG-13 movie “César Chavez” is set for Oct. 3 in the Pan American Park, 703 E. Sherwood Way.
