Frank (Tony) Bergon is coming back to his Valley roots again to regale his friends and fans with stories of Madera County’s shadowy past.
The author and critic will be at the Vineyard Restaurant on Wednesday night in a special presentation of readings and discussion of his books. A Nevada Writers Hall of Fame inductee, Bergon is arguably the most highly acclaimed author and scholar to come from Madera County.
Never mind that he graduated from a preparatory school in San Jose, got his Bachelor’s degree from Boston College, was a Wallace Stagner Fellow at Stanford University, earned his Ph.D. in English and American literature at Harvard, and taught at Vassar for more than 35 years. With all of that, he still belongs to Madera.
Tony was 5 years old when his family returned to Madera, and he entered the 1st grade at St. Joachim’s. After eight years, he graduated from the little Catholic school and used what he had been taught to go out and make a mark for himself...
