Maderan wants to crowdsource lessons

A man raised locally has became one of three co-founders of a Los Angeles website that may someday enable teachers to create, share or sell classroom projects and ideas online.

The crowdsourcing project, CrowdSchool, “aims to disrupt the antiquated textbook industry,” said Timothy Monreal, formerly of Madera.

“The traditional model of school was designed in the 19th century to train obedient factory workers,” said Monreal, who is also the chief learning officer of the program. “CrowdSchool resonates with students because they want to be creators and problem solvers, not factory automatons that memorize facts and instructions.”

Monreal, whose family still lives in Madera, attended St. Joachim School and lived in Madera until 2004, when he moved away for college. Growing up in Madera shaped him as an educator and greatly motivated him to create CrowdSchool, he said...
