3 suspected of DUI arrested at checkpoint

A driver’s license and sobriety checkpoint on Gateway Drive screened nearly 500 vehicles over Labor Day weekend, and three drivers were arrested Saturday on suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to California Highway Patrol Sgt. Michael Donnelly.

CHP and the Madera Police Department hosted the checkpoint Saturday night, and it was staffed by 11 officers and two K-9 drug units.

Six field sobriety tests were given to drivers that had been drinking, one was arrested for possession of narcotics, and 28 drivers were cited for driving without licenses, according to Donnelly. 

“Seven drivers were cited for driving on suspended driver’s licenses and their vehicles were impounded. Five drivers were cited for improper child restraints or seats, and one driver was ticketed for not using his seat belt. No drivers under 21 were found to be under the influence of alcohol,” Donnelly said...
