Speech contest winner on to Monterey

Claire Copher, a junior at Liberty High in the Ranchos, took home first place honors at the Rotary District 10 speech contest held in the Chowchilla High School board room. The three local Rotary Clubs, Chowchilla, Madera and Madera Sunrise, sent their top speakers from each club’s speech contest to the District finals Wednesday night.

The topic for each speaker was “Dream, Act, Win, Now”, with each student having five minutes to speak on their version of the subject.

Copher is a veteran of the contest, having competed in it for three years. She is sponsored by the Madera (Noon) Rotary Club. By winning she receives $175 and will move on to the next level of competition to be held in Monterey on March 28 with a chance to win $1,500.

Justin Toney, a senior at Madera High School who plans to attend Cal Poly and major in Aeronautical Engineering, placed second. Toney was sponsored by Madera Sunrise Rotary...
