Hundreds rally to support shooting survivor

Softball players across the Valley were at Madera South High School for a tournament this weekend, but not adorned with their typical jerseys or vocal team spirit.

Instead, all players wore the number 3 on their backs to honor Brianna Ramirez, the Sanger High student and fellow softball enthusiast who lost her eye in a shooting last month near her home in Parlier. Fresno County Detectives still don’t know who shot Ramirez Feb. 12 in the right eye during gang-related crossfire while she sat in the passenger seat of her mother’s car.

But Sunday at Madera South’s softball fields, Ramirez stayed true to the fiery heart she displayed in a press conference last week – where she told Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims “I got this.” She knew one thing; it was good to be back near a softball field.

And, Ramirez said, it’d be even better when she wears number 3 at the bat...
