Maderans honor those who fought for country, freedom

She stood by her mother on Monday to honor the men in the family and all others who gave their all in service to this country. Tears streaming down her cheeks, Carmen Zamilpa recalled each relative: a brother, a nephew and a few uncles who have fought or are still fighting.

“I love coming to this. I’m just proud. I like it all. It’s something really meaningful for us,” she said.

Zamilpa and her mother, Frances Zamilpa, have attended the annual Veterans Day services at Courthouse Park for six years.

They were among nearly 150 people who heard patriotic music, pledged allegiance to the flag, prayed, heard a guest speaker and watched as wreaths were placed on the veterans monument. The Veterans Day ceremony at Courthouse Park concluded a day’s schedule of events that included placing flags at the headstones of veterans in both cemeteries...
