Two Oakhurst men are behind bars following a short pursuit over Deadwood in rural Madera County late Tuesday. Canine tracked down one suspect and a sheriff’s deputy recovered an Uzi submachine gun.
Joshua Russell Murray, 18, and Adrian Joseph Reyes, 28, remained jailed as of Wednesday.
Around 9:30 p.m., Deputy Richard Gonzales attempted to stop a car near Road 420 and State Route 41, according to Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Erica Stuart. Instead of yielding, the driver (later identified as Reyes) drove northward before he suddenly pulled over at a turnout. There his passenger, Murray, jumped out of the car carrying a backpack and fled down the hill.
Sgt. Tyson Pogue and Deputy Steve Robinson detained the driver while Deputy Gonzales ran off to find Murray. He found the backpack. Inside was an unloaded semiautomatic 9mm Uzi firearm, numerous rounds of ammunition, and a homemade silencer...
