Sunset Waste takes over city’s garbage collection

A family-owned company that helped place Fresno near the top of the nation in recycling efforts has now taken over waste collection and recycling for the City of Madera. Officials say citizens should see increased community outreach — and an eventual reduction in garbage bills — as a result.

Sunset Waste Systems, Inc. took over solid waste collection for Madera on Jan. 1 as part of a 10-year contract after it outbid eight other companies, including previous contract holder Allied Waste Services, last spring.

And unlike Madera County, which is currently suing its previous waste collection company, Madera Disposal Systems, Inc., for $2.9 million in unpaid revenues, the city’s transition to a new collector has been, in the words of Madera Mayor Robert Poythress, “a real pleasure.”

“My hat’s off to Allied for their cooperation in this whole situation,” Poythress said. “I think they have exited gracefully and that’s the right way to do it.” ...
