MADERA RANCHOS — In the more than five years since the tragic death of her son, Martha Tessmer has traveled the nation helping the Impact Teen Driver program spread the word about the consequences of distracted driving.

In the three years working for the Impact Teen Driver program, sponsored by the California Highway Patrol, Tessmer has spoken to more than 1.5 million people and at more than 500 schools.

However, the one place she has been putting off is right in her backyard.

Tessmer returned to Liberty High School in Madera Ranchos on Friday — the place where her son, Donovan, experienced many enjoyable events — to tell the students about his death and the effects of distracted driving...
