Boys close, but not there yet

The Liberty Hawks boys basketball team kept the game close, but couldn’t quite keep the Kerman Lions at bay in a 51-43 North Sequoia League loss.

The Hawks took a brief lead in the fourth quarter and trailed by one with less than two minutes left to play. The Lions then went on a 9-2 run to finish off the Hawks on Friday at Liberty.

“Winning is a habit,” head coach Ken Vossler said. “We have to learn how to win. We’re doing everything right in practice. Our mentality is pretty good, staying together. We have to get over that first hump and get a win.”

The game came down to who was going to get more support. Kerman leading scorer Ramon Chavez scored 27 points and went 8-for-8 from the free throw line, including six in a row in the final 1:33. Stetson Woods led the Hawks with 22 points and 15 rebounds with seven offensive boards and four blocked shots. He scored 10 of Liberty’s final 12 points of the game...
