Residents of Madera County may find themselves being compelled to sign up for garbage collection service.
That possibility arose Monday when the Board of Supervisers met to okay the issuance of a request for proposal for garbage and dump operations for the next 10 years.
The supervisors had been against imposing mandatory collection, but heard a surprising fact during Monday’s hearing: Only about 25 percent of county residents pay to have their garbage hauled, and nobody is sure what happens to the rest.
