Calls to a local crisis center are high, but the amount of people there to pick them up is low, so the department who runs it is set to begin training volunteers to do it at the end of this month.
The Victim Services department, operated by Community Action Partnership of Madera County, will accept applications for its volunteer training program until Friday. Applications may be picked up at the department, 1225 Gill Ave., or downloaded from www.maderacap.org and turned in at Victim Services.
To be eligible to volunteer, a person must be at least 18 years old, pass a criminal background check and be available for the entire training. After they’ve successfully completed the 60-hour training, volunteers must be available every month to work at least two 12 hour shifts and attend a volunteer meeting.
The four-week training is set to start on May 28 from 5 to 10 p.m. at the department’s office. During the first week, training will be on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday because the Memorial Day holiday falls on a Monday.
