This weekend, visitors to Eagle Field, a few miles west of Firebaugh, will be transported back to the 1940s and America’s Greatest Generation with the 2013 Dinner-Dance and Fly-in. Eagle Field was an Army Air Corps airfield used for training pilots who would go on to fight in the skies over Europe and the Pacific.
This weekend’s event is a fundraiser for the Lions Club to benefit Eagle Field restoration projects. It will begin Saturday with gates opening at noon. Bus tours will begin at 1 p.m. with visits to re-enactment military encampments. During the day there will be flybys and landings of historic and military aircraft.
At 3 p.m. the doors of the huge hanger will open and tickets for the dinner will be available. Dinner in the hangar will be served at 6:30 p.m. followed by big band music of the era and a dance contest. During the dinner and dance, many patrons dress in the style of the times with men in uniform and ladies in long, spring dresses.
On Sunday the gates will open at 7 a.m. with the Lions Club serving breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Bus tours of the encampments will continue and flybys and aircraft departure until early afternoon...
