Part of the fun and purpose of the Madera District Fair is to celebrate local agriculture, and this year’s theme, Nuttin’ but Fun, reflects this goal. Almonds, pistachios and walnuts are important crops for Madera County, so it’s no wonder when we get together for a fun time that we offer a salute to our “nutty” heritage.
There are several ways we can use nuts in entries for the fair, which runs from Sep. 5 through 8 at the Madera District Fairgrounds. Entry forms must be turned in by Aug. 13.
There will be a Nuttin’ but Fun Pomander Balls contest, where nuts are incorporated into the design. Photographers can also enter photos of blooming almond trees, orchard workers or still life scenes of nuts. And don’t forget all the ways in which nuts can be used in many of the cooking and baking contests. Add them to cookies, preserves, breads, cakes, pies and confections such as nut brittles or sugared walnuts. In the fine art division, one can paint nut trees and orchards. For home arts entries, one can sew a cute apron or some placemats with nut appliqués.
Applicants can browse the exhibitor handbook for even more ideas. There are dozens of other opportunities to participate in various entry divisions that don’t involve “getting nutty.” ...
