MSTC to present homeless Shakespeare play

Madera South Theatre Company (MSTC) begins a two-week run of William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy “Twelfth Night” at 7:30 tonight with a twist on the classic.

“Twelfth Night’ is a wonderful creative leap for this collaborative team, taking us into the world of the homeless,” said teacher Ginger Latimer, performing arts chair for Madera South High School.

The tale traditionally centers around the shipwrecked heroine, Viola, who disguises herself as a man and finds work for a nobleman. Infatuation, love, mistaken identities and more follow.

The play’s name refers to the 12th night of Christmas, which is the eve of the Catholic holiday of Epiphany. In Elizabethan England, it had become a carnival-like day of social reversals and revelry.
