Madera Unified Superintendent Ed Gonzalez remains optimistic about matching funds from the state for the district’s building program. Yet some fear that not only has the state school facilities fund dried up, but the prospect of there being another state school building bond on the November ballot is growing dim.
On July 22, MUSD trustees passed a resolution to place a $70 million bond issue on the Nov. ballot. The measure states that if the bond passes, the district “would qualify to receive millions from state matching funds for additional K-12 classroom facilities.”
On Wednesday, Gonzalez expressed confidence to The Tribune that the state bond would be put on the ballot.
Recent developments in Sacramento, however, have raised doubts as to whether Gonzalez’ optimism is misplaced. There is growing concern that a state school building bond will not even be put on the ballot, much less be passed by the voters...
