Madera County Sheriff John Anderson put a twist on his ALS ice bucket challenge Friday by using iced Gatorade instead of frigid water.
ALS stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. The drenching of one’s self with ice water, often on video, helps raise funds for the ALS Association.
Deputy Sheriff Luis Padgett poured a bucket worth of about a dozen Gatorade bottles onto Anderson in front of the Sheriff’s Department office on Road 28 at noon. Using Gatorade was seen as better than “tapping into Madera County wells to do the event,” according to sheriff’s spokeswoman Eric Stuart.
“We go out here and we preach about water use and all that,” Anderson said, “and people’s lawns are dying so we picked Gatorade because of the drought.” ...
