Environmental group lauds district

The head of the nonprofit Environment California Research and Policy Center visited a solar panel project at Golden Valley Unified School District to honor superintendent Andy Alvarado and the board for its commitment to going “green.”

The center is releasing a report, “Greening the Bottom Line 2012,” that highlighted the project.

“Golden Valley invested in clean energy solutions to help green up the bottom line,” the center’s program director Bernadette Del Chiaro said Friday near the solar panels at Liberty High School. “We are releasing a report to highlight clean energy solutions within the school districts and other areas. The district will save $250,000 over five years and 2.3 millions pounds of carbon dioxide.”

Alvarado’s main concern about the solar power project was the bottom line. With the energy prices on the rise and the state education dollars on the decline, Alvarado wanted to find a way to keep his energy bills stagnant...
