The natives of a small indigenous town in southwestern Mexico are set to celebrate their patron saint in Madera much in the same way as they did when they still lived south of the border.
The 4th annual Fiesta del Pueblo 2012, organized by the Popular Committee of the Town Coatecas Altas, includes a run, a Mass, a basketball tournament and a party.
The basketball tournament, where 13 teams competed, was held Saturday and Sunday. The team Miahuateco took first place, VMS1 (Virgin Mary Section 1) ranked second, and Santa Maria placed third. Proceeds from the tourney — which raised $1,300 — paid for trophies and will also be used to pay for the upcoming party, said Brenda Ordaz, a member of the committee.
