Though thousands of firefighting personnel have made notable progress against a rampaging blaze within and around Yosemite National Forest’s back country, officials said Tuesday the battle is far from over.
The Rim Fire claimed more than 179,481 acres of forest land by Tuesday afternoon — around 280 square miles some 45 miles north of Oakhurst — and destroyed 111 structures including 31 residences said Pam Martin, fire information officer with the U.S. Forest Service.
“The remaining 80 are outbuildings, tents, and other structures,” Martin said. Martin said that much of the damage to buildings came when the flames rampaged through the city-of-Berkeley-owned Tuolumne Family Camp late Sunday.
